The Mississippi River flows from Mazinaw Lake near Kaladar all the way to where it meets the mighty Ottawa River near Fitzroy Harbour.  Its path through Ontario’s Highlands meanders through many towns and villages, and includes numerous sections of magnificent rapids that are a sight to behold - especially during the high water season of spring.

When rivers and streams begin to flow faster in spring, the lure of the wild water is great. F ill an afternoon or a whole day visiting these beautiful spots along the Mississippi River.

Remember to be cautious when approaching a waterfall or whitewater area. Stay safely distant from the water and pay attention to your surroundings.

Stop #1: Pakenham

No visit to Pakenham is complete without a trip across the Historic Five Span Bridge which passes over the Mississippi River.  Make sure you peek all the way across before taking your turn on the bridge, it's narrow!  The Five Span Bridge Park, which is just downstream from the bridge, is a perfect spot to see the architecture of the stone bridge, gaze at the rapids and take a short stroll.

Water rushes beneath a bridge in winter.

While You're Here:

While you are in Pakenham, be sure to check out the little shops and stores, including Nicholson’s Sundries and the 1840’s General Store and Bakery.  If it's ice-cream weather, definitely make a stop at Scoops for a delicious treat!

Stop #2: Blakeney Rapids

A short 10km south of Pakenham along highway 29, you will find Blakeney Rapids.  Blakeney Rapids is a remarkable spot that is particularly awe-inspiring during the spring high water season.  The easy trail network allows you to walk through the forest and across footbridges to view the rapids from several different spots, each getting better as you make your way towards the bottom of the rapids.

While You're Here:

There are several picnic tables and many benches placed along the trail to encourage visitors to enjoy the beauty of this incredible location, but be careful along the shoreline, especially during highwater.  I have never managed a trip to Blakeney Rapids without a stop at one of the benches to take in the sights and sounds of the river rushing by

Stop #3: Almonte

Traveling another 7 km along highway 29 gets you to the historic downtown of Almonte.  Almonte was built along the Mississippi River and has numerous truly incredible views.  Take the Riverwalk Trail from the beautiful Old Town Hall all the way to the bottom of Mill Street.  During spring run off, you will be treated to stunning views of the river rushing through town passing over several drops with incredible power and force.

While You're Here:

While you are there, be sure to stroll along the historic Mill Street.  You will find a lovely mix of bakeries, boutiques, gift shops, vintage stores, coffee shops and cafes.  Mill Street Books, VAMOS and Ottawa Valley Coffee are a few of my favorites.
