Exploring closer to home has never been more exciting, especially when you can escape for a little getaway in a truly unique spot. This tiny escape lets you hit pause and enjoy new places, spaces, and experiences that feel worlds away, yet it’s all just a short drive from home.
If you’ve ever been curious about what it’s like to live in a tiny home, the Highland House gives you a chance to get away and test it out. This cozy, tiny home sits on five acres of rolling hills in Lanark Highlands. The space offers incredible sunsets, starry skies, and a taste of rural life.
Located within a one-hour drive of Ottawa and just a short drive from Perth, Almonte, and Carleton Place, you can pair a cozy, rustic stay with exploring charming local towns and experiences.
Walk along the well-kept paths past the hobby farm, where you’ll be greeted by the friendly sheep, chickens, and Chef the pig. Outside, they provide an outdoor fire pit, firewood and BBQ.

All the amenities you need to make it cozy for enjoying the outdoors. Inside, you’ll find everything you need in a minimal yet intentional setting, a space that’s fully equipped for cooking, relaxing, and enjoying your time.

The Highland House is conveniently located close to several charming towns to explore for the day.
Perth
Perth truly feels like a hallmark town, with its charming downtown filled with heritage stone buildings, boutique shops, cozy cafés, and a great selection of restaurants that make you want to linger all day. Start your day with a coffee and a piece of pie for breakfast at the Perth Pie Co.
Yes, you read that correctly, you will not be disappointed. Spend the morning exploring downtown’s local shops.

If you’re into thrifting, head to LIDA. Flint & Honey is another must-visit for shopping and supporting Canadian brands. Other popular shops include The Book Nook, Perth Chocolate Works, and of course, The Perth Cheese Shop!
Almonte
If you enjoy uncovering local gems, sipping tasty coffee, and wandering through a picturesque riverside town, Almonte is the place for you. Explore the downtown area and browse through shops such as Big Vintage, Packrats Bazaar, Pêches et Poivre and Cheerfully Made. For lunch, stop at North Market for seasonal favourites, and enjoy the menu that never disappoints.

Spend the afternoon taking in the river views at the iconic waterfall, then visit Dairy Distillery for a quick tasting or happy hour before dinner.
End your day with a cozy meal at Joe’s Italian Kitchen or The Sterling, both ideal spots to end your perfect day spent in Almonte.
Carleton Place
Take a drive into downtown Carleton Place, where the main street is walkable and offers heritage buildings, murals, and local shops. You can spend a morning sipping coffee at The Foundry, then take your time exploring the boutiques, bakeries, and locally owned stores lining the main street. I highly recommend having lunch at The Blue Spoon Atelier and ordering the creamy pesto chicken sandwich. Otherwise, plan to head in for an evening.

There are two breweries to sample flights: Braumeister Brewing Co. and Stalwart Brewing Company, before dinner at St. James Gate.
Maplestone Ranch and Retreat
If you prefer a quiet day spa tucked away in Lanark County, where you can rest, relax and enjoy the outdoors. During the winter months, they offer a Winter Escape Package. Unlike traditional spas, where you’re sharing space with other guests, you get exclusive access to the entire space. It’s an intimate way to experience, where you can genuinely relax at your own pace.

Nearby Hiking Trails
This hiking trail is unique because there’s an opportunity to see Canada’s largest colony of Showy Lady’s Slipper orchids. The trail is considered easy and approx. 2 km, taking you through an upland forest to an incredible lookout. Keep note that this trail is open from May to October.
The Baird Trail in Lanark Highlands is considered one of the most beautiful trails in the area. You’ll walk through the largest individual maple and beech trees in the area.
If you’re looking for something a bit more challenging, hike the Blueberry Mountain Trail. This 5km hike brings you to one of the prettiest views in the area (especially when visiting in the Fall). Pack a lunch, and enjoy the outdoors for the afternoon.
The Highland House is truly such a unique stay, with endless opportunities to explore the surrounding areas. But if you just need a quick rest and weekend reset, this tiny home provides that and more. Pack your groceries, pick up a bottle of wine, stay in your PJs all weekend and just enjoy what this place has to offer.
