I have been serving up delectable tradition in the Ottawa Valley for more than 55 years; my presence marking the summer season. I am present in the memories of many, my wares glistening in the sunshine: crisp, golden, and delicious. Where Am I?
What started in 1960 as a mobile chip truck has since become a widely-known landmark, with locals, cottagers, passersby, and long-distance fans making a point of visiting at least once a summer (and many even more than that).
…I am Wes’ Chips in Arnprior
Now stationary on Madawaska Boulevard, Wes’ Chips does one thing, and they do it way better than well. Step up to place your order, breathe in the scent of potatoey goodness, and brace yourself for a delicious wave of perfection as you’re handed your box of fries; crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
This golden tradition was perfected more than 55 years ago, when founders Wes and Monique Dodds bought a 1956 Ford truck and began experimenting with different potatoes and oils until the ‘secret recipe’ was created. Today, under the ownership of Karen Bretzlaff and André Post, the business not only continues to operate out of this original truck, but also uses the same recipe, and carries forth the founders’ passion for French-frying. André even drives a Mercedes-Benz that has been converted to run on chip oil – now that is dedication to one’s craft!
Insider tip: We take our condiments seriously and would never want a fry to feel left out. Order your fries ‘halfway’ to receive them half-filled so you can top with any salt, vinegar, or ketchup before the box is topped up with the rest.
