When you live a peaceful and tranquil life amongst the natural beauty and Maple trees that capture the essence of the Lanark County countryside, the seasons serenade us with the renewal, growth, maturity and mortality that defines the circle of life.
As Spring graciously makes its appearance and awakens the local inhabitants, especially the plants, animals and trees, it is the undeniable sights, sounds and scents that hint at longer and warmer days ahead.
In Lanark County, the onset of warmer days coaxes the flow of one of Mother Nature’s most extraordinary gifts. In a matter of weeks, the sap that is collected from the thousands of tapped Maple trees is masterfully boiled and transformed into the liquid gold that gives Lanark County its identity as the ‘Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario’.
With generations of family owned sugar bushes dotting the landscape, countless memories have been made by parents and their little ones visiting their favourite sugar shack year after year. Any child growing up in Lanark County who has been witness to pure maple syrup rolling down a golden stack of buttermilk pancakes, will no doubt say that ‘maple’ is their favourite sweet treat!
The running of the sap creates a whole new vibe in the historic Village of Pakenham. On the first weekend in April, the official start of ‘Maple Weekend’ in Ontario, the village welcomes the Maple Run Studio Tour – the first of four ‘Creative Seasons’ art tours that encourage the spirit of adventure in Lanark County.
It’s a time to shake off the winter blues and take a journey of individual expression, colour, imagination, texture, and taste. This annual Tour highlights the vibrant works of various local and surrounding area artists, showcases uniquely crafted foods and beverages of area visionaries, and proudly promotes local maple syrup producers. To take the Tour is nourishment for the soul.
Wander through Pakenham to rejuvenate and escape the ordinary as you connect with the friendly faces and peaceful surroundings that populate this village; then let the sights and sounds of the powerful Mississippi River thundering underneath the historic Five Arched Stone Bridge take your breath away. Feel connected by the works created by seasoned artists, savour the flavours of local foods, and meet the producers from a spring-fed Craft brewery and an apple Cider farm to appreciate the inspiration behind their line of tasty beverages.
And, don’t forget the maple! Another wonderful way to celebrate one of the sweetest moments of the Spring season.
