Come Wander
Foraging

Fall is a season for hearty, earthy flavours – root veggies, squash, and pumpkin – but have you ever considered expanding your recipe cards to include things like cattail roots and shoots, burdock, and wild mushrooms? Every autumn, Mother Nature offers a bounty of wild edibles, though most of us don’t know how to find them, let alone prepare them.

Try your hand at foraging this fall to reconnect with the Earth, expand your knowledge of food, and sample some really unique – and delicious – new flavours. With the help of the expert guides below, you’ll be impressing hiking buddies and future dinner guests in no time.

In Golden Lake: The Sacred Gardener

Going beyond just learning to identify and harvest wild plants, Forage and Feast: Fall on October 5 is a one-day workshop that will explore the benefits of these plants for both the Earth and our bodies. Begin the morning by walking to wild land, learning about wild plants and foraging before returning for a served, local, wild infused, organic lunch. Enjoy the benefits of your morning work in the afternoon as you process, prepare, and cook the food collected to end the day with an early farm-style feast.

In Haliburton: Yours Outdoors

Ranging anywhere from 2-4 hours, a customizable Wild Edibles! experience is the chance to forage the woods, wetlands, and roadsides of the Haliburton Highlands to learn to identify and harvest wild plants. Try your own hand at harvesting, then discover how to prepare them and indulge with the spoils of your work with a delicious meal highlighting these local wild ingredients. Hone in the foraging craft to focus on a very popular and common wild ingredient: the mushroom! With thousands of mushroom species in Ontario, the immersive Introduction to Foraging for Wild Edible Mushrooms experience is an opportunity to learn how to find, identify, and harvest wild edible mushrooms – a skill you can bring home with you.

In Gooderham: Bedrock & Brambles

Keep an eye on Bedrock & Brambles’ website for workshops and socials you can join throughout the year, or get a small group of friends together and book your own custom experience. Spend a day outside discovering the tastiest and most plentiful mushrooms during a Wild Mushroom Foraging experience, or build the skills to ferment at home during a Wild Fermentation workshop – this starts with a hike to gather ingredients for kimchi, includes a hands on lesson about fermentation, and an Easy Fermenter Wide Mouth lid kit to bring home and put your learnings into practice.
