“We tend to forget how much there is to discover in our own backyard, especially when there’s an entire world to explore”, write Kristen and Siya of the popular Hopscotch the Globe travel blog.
The pair, originally from the Toronto area, recently returned home to Ontario after three months spent in the California sun to experience an authentic Canadian winter just hours away in Ontario’s Highlands.
After travelling the world, the couple was eager to return to their roots; their trip included the ultimate list of winter experiences fit for a true Canuck escaping the summer sun (as only true Canucks would): cozy lodges and remote winter cabins; a slow paced snowshoe hike and fast snowmobiles; and that proud “watch me” feeling you can only get by stepping out into the great outdoors in -20 C temperatures to conquer your next adventure.
But what made the couple feel most excited about being back in Canada? The surprising number of “first times” they experienced so close to home, and nowhere else in the world, like a man-made ice wall that tested their limits, an intimate look at the lives of wild wolves and an Instagram-worthy face-to-face with a moose – what could be more Canadian?
