We’re slowly creeping out of a long, long (did I mention, long?) winter, and now that we’re venturing toward the warm summer months, I’ve been itching to plan out our holidays. We’re looking forward to booking a couple of weeks off this summer and taking our family on a little getaway. But, if I can be perfectly honest, I want to plan out other kinds of mini-holidays to experience the varied versions of relaxation and ‘time off’ this summer. So, I’ve put together a roster of local-to-us places that we have on our radar for this summer. Each location fits perfectly into its assigned themed holiday.

The Family Getaway: Sylvania Lodge

When it comes to a family getaway, the Sylvania Lodge hits the mark in all areas. Sylvania Lodge is a family-oriented facility on Dalhousie Lake in Lanark Highlands, and its accommodation and dining offerings are perfect for us. It’s the quiet getaway that my husband and I crave while also providing enough experiences to keep our kids entertained. They’re two and four years old, so it’ll be really nice to watch them giggle as they dip their toes in the water and squish sand in their hands as they make sandcastles. We can take a moment to breathe as we soak in nature while hiking at the nearby Purdon Conservation Authority.

With that, Sylvania Lodge is officially on our summer bucket list.

The Girls’ Getaway: Circa 1894 Bed & Breakfast

I love my family. I do. But sometimes, a girl needs a break! I’d love to round up one or three friends and escape the homestead for some pampering, quality conversations (kids’ birthday parties don’t count) and some good laughs. Circa 1894 just opened last year, and it’s a fully renovated bed and breakfast located in a former United Church in Lanark Highlands. The best part? It’s an adults-only escape! It’s the perfect backdrop to re-connect with friends as we dine on delicious food and feel the everyday stresses escape our bodies while getting a massage. They even have a girlfriends’ package which includes accommodation, food, unlimited spa time and massage or reiki.

Romantic Getaway: The Perth Manor

You know how, when you live in your town, you never undergo the tourist experience? Well, I’d like to change that for one weekend. My wedding anniversary is in September and we usually go away on a weekend trip. This year, I think it’d be fun if we stayed in town (but just not in our house!). I’d love to experience Perth as a tourist while getting to stay at the popular Perth Manor Boutique Hotel. It’s been on my bucket list to stay there so I can unwind on the patio overlooking the jaw-dropping garden, close my eyes and sip coffee and disconnect while re-connecting with my better half. They even have a romance package where they deliver coffee right to your room. Yes, please!

The Solo Escape: Generations Inn

I have a friend who has taken a couple of solo weekend working retreats, and I want to copy her smart moves. Better yet, I think I’ve found the perfect spot for such a weekend. Mable’s Cottage is a one-bedroom cottage located at Generations Inn near Carleton Place. The place is oozing with history, and it has everything you’d want in a quiet weekend away: beautiful waterfront views which would inspire creativity, a quaint cottage where I can unwind over tea and a picturesque restaurant.

The College Friends’ Gathering: Victoria Park

Every August long weekend, my university girlfriends and I (and our families) get together. From Guelph to North Bay to Perth, our group lives so far away from one another that we rotate as hosts. Because they’re coming our way this year, and they have RVs, we think that the Victoria Park Campground and Marina in Smiths Falls fits the bill. We have nine children under the age of six getting together (eek), so it’s important that we have a lot of space to play. Victoria Park is a serviced campground where the kids can chase one another on the play structures, the adults can catch up over lunch at the picnic areas and the moms can re-connect when we take just a few steps toward to the downtown area for an afternoon of shopping.

These five locations set the tone for our themed getaways this summer. We love that we won’t have to travel far for our planned escapes, and these spots truly fit the bill for all the memories we plan to make this summer.
