Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Two weeks ago, we were counting down the hours, minutes, seconds to midnight; the beginning of 2017. For me, this was a bittersweet moment. While saying “Hello!” to 2017 is invigorating, saying “Goodbye” to 2016 was a little more difficult than anticipated. 2016 saw the birth of The Wanderer, an exploration of self and surroundings, one complete year out of the city and in the woods living on the banks of a winding river, 30 000kms of adventures on my vehicle, and so many new relationships formed along the way.

However, 2016 was simply the beginning of a beautiful thing. 2017 holds the promise of unknown adventures ahead, and to me, that is the most beautiful thing of all.

I am the type of person who writes; I keep a journal of my thoughts, I leave notes around the house for my boyfriend, I handwrite letters to long distance friends. To me there is something so finite, so real, about putting your thoughts to paper (or the hypothetical pages of the world wide web I suppose). It only seemed fitting to capture my feelings towards 2016 & 2017 in love letters.

Dearest 2016,

You were nothing short of fabulous! You taught me how to let go and trust, and that is something I will never forget. Where there once was uncertainty, now lies freedom and excitement when faced with not knowing what is to come next. You have built in me a strong foundation and lead me down a path of exploration. The confidence you provided me through experiencing, learning and evolving, will guide my wanderings and help me courageously navigate through this crazy life.

I couldn’t have asked for a more liberating year. I will think of you fondly and continue to live out the lessons you’ve taught me for years to come.

Much love,
The Wanderer

Welcome 2017!

Hi there, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I have been anticipating your arrival, spending night after night wondering what new opportunities and experiences you hold; where will my traveling spirit roam to this year? What new skill would I like to learn? Will the adventures we dreamed up in 2016 come to realization in 2017? Will it be cold enough this winter for the creek to freeze over for skating? You know, the important questions in life.

You represent a world of opportunity, and I am anxious to explore you.

p.s. Don’t worry, I found my camera when looking for Christmas decorations last month, so, as per New Years resolution #6, I will be sure to capture the beauty of life and the moments that stand out.

Cheers to the road ahead,
The Wanderer

In my humble opinion, looking back allows us to look forward with more clarity. 2016’s accomplishments are the stepping stones towards 2017’s adventures.

Happy Wandering,
The Wanderer
